Signal Hill Paragliding Cape Town — The Complete Guide

Signal Hill sits above the Atlantic Seaboard and is one of Cape Town’s two main paragliding launch sites. Flights from here land at the Sea Point Promenade — one of the most scenic touchdown points in tandem paragliding anywhere in the world. If you’ve watched gliders banking over Sea Point and wondered what it looks like from up there, this guide is for you.

The Launch Site

The Signal Hill launch is located within the Table Mountain National Park, accessed via Signal Hill Road. Your instructor will confirm the exact meeting point when you book. The launch faces west to north-west, which means it flies when Cape Town’s north-westerly and westerly wind cycles are active — the same winds that bring calm, settled weather to the city. These are typically gentle, consistent conditions that make Signal Hill an excellent site for first-time flyers.

Wind direction is everything in paragliding, and Signal Hill has a well-documented, formally assessed operating envelope. The site flies comfortably in westerly to northerly winds up to 30kph. When conditions are outside this window — too strong, wrong direction, or a prefrontal system moving through — the flight doesn’t happen. Your instructor makes this call on the day using live readings from the Signal Hill iWeathar mast, not a forecast alone.

The Flight

Takeoff is a forward launch: your instructor inflates the glider behind you, you run a few steps into the wind together, and within seconds your feet leave the ground. The transition from running to flying is surprisingly smooth — most people describe the moment of lift as gentle rather than dramatic.

Once airborne, you’re looking out over the Atlantic Seaboard. Sea Point’s promenade and tidal pools are directly below. Further out, the ocean stretches west without obstruction. Over your shoulder, Table Mountain’s western face and Lion’s Head frame the city. On a clear day the view extends to Robben Island in the north and down the Twelve Apostles range to the south.

Flight duration depends on conditions on the day. Your instructor will make the most of available lift to keep you in the air as long as safely possible.

The Landing Zone

Signal Hill flights land at the Sea Point Promenade — the grassy area beside the promenade walkway. It’s a generous, well-established landing zone with first aid equipment on site. After landing, a shuttle brings you and your instructor back up to Signal Hill Road where the experience began. The promenade is also a great spot for people in your group who aren’t flying to watch arrivals — it’s a short walk from the main parking areas along Beach Road.

What to Bring and Wear

Closed running shoes are essential — you’ll take a few running steps on takeoff and open shoes aren’t suitable. Comfortable clothing that you can move in, a light jacket, and sunscreen. Leave large bags in the car. Your instructor’s GoPro captures the flight, so you don’t need to manage your phone in the air. In-flight photo and video packages are available to purchase on the day.
