Weather & Safety Tools

At Cape Hope Paragliding, weather decisions are never left to guesswork. Our team uses live wind stations, local safety systems and detailed flying forecasts to help our pilots understand the conditions before every flight.

These tools were built by Fielies de Villiers and form part of the way our team approaches flying in Cape Town: careful observation, local knowledge and constant respect for the mountain.

RASPZOOM Viewer

RASP is the gold standard for soaring forecasts because of its high-resolution 1.3 km model, fine enough to accurately capture the micro-flow of wind around mountains. But the standard blipmap presentation makes that detail hard to see. RASPZOOM was developed to unlock it: a zoomed-in, interactive view of the wind field that clearly reveals local accelerations, lee-side effects and reverse flows around Cape Town's terrain.

Pilots can also pull up an instant point forecast for any spot on the map, with all the key parameters for XC and safe flying: wind through the day, thermal strength and boundary layer height.

Signal Hill Safety & Live Stations

Known to local pilots as SigsSafe

Signal Hill's coastal conditions can change in minutes, and the wind at launch doesn't always tell the full story. SigsSafe was developed to monitor multiple live wind stations around the site simultaneously: front, back and Sea Point. It applies structured risk logic across the flying zones, giving pilots real-time site status and caution alerts before and during flying.

Open Signal Hill Safety

Built from decades of local flying experience

These systems grew out of decades of flying Signal Hill and the Cape's coastal sites. They were first built by Fielies for his own flying decisions, then refined into tools used daily by our team and the wider Cape Town pilot community.

If we fly you today, it's because the data says today is a good day.
