Where It All Begins: Signal Hill Road
You’ve decided to do it. You’ve booked your tandem paragliding flight over Cape Town and now the nerves are setting in. What actually happens? Will it be scary? What do you wear? Where do you land?
We get these questions every single day — and we love them. It means someone is about to experience something that changes the way they see Cape Town forever. So here is exactly what to expect, from the moment you arrive to the moment your feet touch the ground.
Every tandem paragliding flight with Cape Hope Paragliding starts at the same place — the end of Signal Hill Road, up in the mountain park above the city bowl. When you arrive, you’ll meet your instructor, get a feel for the conditions, and find out whether you’ll be flying from Signal Hill or Lion’s Head that day.
Both launch sites sit within the Table Mountain National Park and both offer views that will stop you in your tracks. Signal Hill looks out over the Atlantic Seaboard, Sea Point, and the open ocean. Lion’s Head gives you Table Mountain over one shoulder and the city stretching towards the Cape Flats over the other. Neither is a bad option.
Your instructor will read the wind and decide which is the better call. This is one of the first things you’ll notice about paragliding — the wind is the boss. Everything moves around it.
The Briefing: Less Complicated Than You Think
Before you go anywhere near the edge, your instructor sits down with you for a pre-flight briefing. This covers the three things you actually need to know:
- How the takeoff works — you’ll run a few steps forward as the glider inflates above you, then you’re airborne. That’s it.
- What to do in the air — nothing, mostly. Relax, look around, enjoy it. Your instructor handles all the flying.
- How the landing works — you’ll lift your legs on approach and land standing up, usually on soft grass near the beachfront.
Most people are surprised by how simple it is. You don’t need to memorise anything technical. The only job you have is to keep running until your feet leave the ground.
The Launch: Three Steps and You’re Flying
Takeoffs from Signal Hill and Lion’s Head are what paragliders call forward launches — you face into the wind, your instructor inflates the glider behind you, and when the time is right, you both run forward together.
Three or four steps in, you feel the glider lift you. Then your feet are off the ground and Cape Town opens up below you.
That first moment of lift is unlike anything else. The city, the mountain, the ocean — all of it suddenly visible in a single sweep. Most people go quiet for a few seconds. Some laugh. Some shout. All of them grin.
In the Air: What It Actually Feels Like
Here is what surprises people most about paragliding: it is quiet.
There’s no engine noise, no wind howling in your ears, no roller-coaster drops. You’re sitting in a comfortable harness, suspended beneath a wing, and the world below you is moving slowly and silently. It feels less like a thrill ride and more like floating.
Your instructor will point out landmarks — Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Twelve Apostles range, the sweep of Clifton’s beaches. Depending on conditions, you might spiral gently, soar across the hillside, or catch a thermal that lifts you higher. Every flight is different, and that’s the honest truth.
Flight time typically ranges from 10 to 20 minutes. We can’t guarantee a specific duration because we’re flying on real, live wind — not a machine. What we can guarantee is that your instructor will keep you in the air for as long as conditions safely allow.
The Landing: Beachfront Touchdown
Most flights end on the beachfront — usually the Sea Point promenade or the grassy area above Clifton. You approach gently, lift your legs on your instructor’s cue, and touch down standing.
It is, by most accounts, a very soft landing.
Once you’re down, our shuttle collects you and your instructor and brings you back up to where you started. You’ll also have the chance to watch back your GoPro footage before you leave — and decide whether you want to keep it. Most people do.
